Graphic Header AFM Applications in Fluid Power

Extrude Hone’s Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) process continues to be a leading and revolutionary deburring, polishing and edge radiusing process. Today, many industries, including fluid power, rely on AFM processing to provide precision and tighter tolerance surface finishing to some of the most critical components made by man. Because hydraulic and pneumatic components feature concave surfaces, numerous internal flow intersections, bends or curves, and cross-drilled holes or passages, AFM is a viable processing method for the fluid power industry.

During AFM processing, our unique abrasive laden polymer — or, media — is forced through the restricted flow path that requires finishing. In fluid power components, AFM processing follows the same path as the liquid (mineral oils or water) used in hydraulics or the gas (air or inert gas) used in pneumatics. The abrasive polymer conforms to the internal passages, deburring, polishing and edge radiusing as it moves along. This allows the fluid power liquid or gas to flow more easily and unrestricted through its passageways.

AFM processing removed sharp edges and produces the high-quality, superior finishes that are vital to the performance of hydraulic and pneumatic manifolds, valves, valve bodies, pump housings and actuators:
  • » Improved performance and reliability
  • » Increased flow of liquid and air
  • » Controlled, accurate radii
  • » Smoothed and uniform surfaces
