Graphic Header CoolPulse™ Applications in Medical Manufacturing

In addition to a vast number of open, traditional surgeries that take place today, laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, procedures also are widely performed. As a result, the need is great for not only conventional surgical instruments (blades, clamps, forceps, retractors), but also increasingly smaller and intricate laparoscopic devices and implants (pacemaker electrodes, guidewire catheters, stents, cannulas, bone screws and plates, staplers).

Yet the fragile nature and the minute size (5 mm to 10 mm) of these minimally invasive components make it far more difficult and costly to properly deburr, polish, finish and clean. With its CoolPulse electrolytic technology, Extrude Hone offers medical manufacturers a revolutionary and cost-effective process that is ideal for these delicate medical components.

CoolPulse deburrs, polishes, stress relieves, cleans and passivates (i.e., removes free-iron particles) in one finishing process. Yet it does so without stressing or compromising the critical and delicate features of intricate devices or instruments, attaining ultra-smooth surfaces down to 0.1 ?m (4 µm inches). CoolPulse is optimized for edge effect. However, significant surface and cleanliness improvements are a natural by-product, enabling CoolPulse to meet the stringent standards of medical manufacturers. In fact, at microscopic levels, CoolPulse eliminates the most minuscule of burrs, imperfections and decontaminates to provide a uniform surface that is free of flaws that could harbor pathogens or other contaminates.

Extrude Hone CoolPulse technology is compatible with components constructed of most conductive metals. However, titanium and precious metal components are not ideally suited for CoolPulse, as a tough oxide film is formed during the process, making the surface nearly impenetrable by any charged ion process.

With its latest CoolPulse innovation, Extrude Hone offers medical manufacturers superior processing capabilities and results at an economical cost:

  • » Reduced occurrence of component damage or failure during processing
  • » Eliminated microscopic surface flaws and other contaminates
  • » Smoothed, ultra-uniform and mirror-like surfaces
  • » Improved performance, strength and reliability of component
  • » Extended component life
